A friend of mine online created a playlist of music on her proboard that we, along with others, chatplay on and she asked me to listen to the first song, “I Can’t Decide” by the Scissor Sisters last night. So I did… and I was blown away. I loved it instantly, finding it quirky, weird, incredibly catchy, and, just overall, very clever. I have listened to it several times last night and today, and cannot seem to stop listening to it. Whenever I hear something else, I have to leave or stop listening to it and go back to this song. I have been finding it difficult to get my mind off of I Can’t Decide for I have been trying to decipher it, which has been rather fun and amusing. =) All weekend I have been struggling on what to write for this blog since I am not inspired to write about my break, so I decided to write about it. =D
Here is the song (and actually a pretty good video that someone made of it starring the Joker xD):

(It is frighteningly rather befitting of the Joker. Lol! xP)
And the lyrics… (beware, there are a couple of curse words, but it is not too bad):
“I Can’t Decide”
It’s not easy having yourself a good time
Greasing up those bets and betters
Watching out they don’t four-letter
Fuck and kiss you both at the same time
Smells-like something I’ve forgotten
Curled up died and now it’s rotten
I’m not a gangster tonight
Don’t want to be a bad guy
I’m just a loner baby
And now you’ve gotten in my way
I can’t decide
Whether you should live or die
Oh, you’ll probably go to heaven
Please don’t hang your head and cry
No wonder why
My heart feels dead inside
It’s cold and hard and petrified
Lock the doors and close the blinds
We’re going for a ride
It’s a bitch convincing people to like you
If I stop now call me a quitter
If lies were cats you’d be a litter
Pleasing everyone isn’t like you
Dancing jigs until I’m crippled
Slug ten drinks I won’t get pickled
I’ve got to hand it to you
You’ve played by all the same rules
It takes the truth to fool me (maybe told what feels or said opinion)
And now you’ve made me angry
I can’t decide
Whether you should live or die
Oh, you’ll probably go to heaven
Please don’t hang your head and cry
No wonder why
My heart feels dead inside
It’s cold and hard and petrified
Lock the doors and close the blinds
We’re going for a ride
Oh I could throw you in the lake
Or feed you poisoned birthday cake
I wont deny I’m gonna miss you when you’re gone (maybe miss, but not sincere… not love)
Oh I could bury you alive
But you might crawl out with a knife
And kill me when I’m sleeping
That’s why
I can’t decide
Whether you should live or die
Oh, you’ll probably go to heaven
Please don’t hang your head and cry
No wonder why
My heart feels dead inside
It’s cold and hard and petrified
Lock the doors and close the blinds
We’re going for a ride
Now it is time for my interpretation…
Personally, overall I believe this song is about someone who is a sociopath/psychopath who is trying to decide whether or not he should kill the person who he is singing to. I believe he is a psychopath because of several of the lines like, “Don’t want to be a bad guy/ I’m just a loner baby…” (sociopaths do not choose to be sociopaths. They just are. They are also antisocial, explaining the loner part…), “It’s a bitch convincing people to like you” (sociopaths/psychopaths do not naturally fit in, or at least most of them. They are, again, normally antisocial and do not like being around people, preferring to be by themselves. Now some can be around people and act “normal,” but it is all an act. So it makes sense why he claims it is a bitch trying to have people like him. He has to work at it and pretend he fits in.), and, well, the whole chorus honestly (lol). I mean, he is contemplating whether or not he should kill this person and says he is cold inside, feeling nothing. Many criminologists and profilers claim psychopaths are incapable of real love…
Alright, now to start from the beginning with the very first line, “It’s not easy having yourself a good time,” I feel that is pretty straightforward. He is saying that it is difficult for him to have a good, fun time. Nothing too special there. Honestly, I have no idea what the two lines about the bets and betters and the four-letter are about so I cannot comment on those. I have been trying to figure it out for a while now and can come up with nothing. “Fuck and kiss you both at the same time” makes me think that the person he is contemplating killing is some sort of lover (does not mean he loves him/her though) or someone he has just had relations with. He doesn’t go much further than that which also further convinces me that he does not truly care or love this person, telling me is a psychopath. This could also mean that the person lives with him… “Smells-like something I’ve forgotten/ Curled up died and now it’s rotten” Now this could be him talking about things that he has killed/tortured and forgotten about, but he can now smell it since it is decaying (under his house maybe? O.o), or something to that extent. Or this could be him talking about the sex. I have read sometimes in books and seen in shows and whatnot where a character who does not enjoy the sex and describes it as smelling foul… I highly doubt the second one, but I felt like throwing it out there. I am more convinced it is the first one.
“I’m not a gangster tonight/ Don’t want to be a bad guy/ I’m just a loner baby/ And now you’ve gotten in my way” So I think here the guy is saying how he is not a criminal tonight and did not intend on hurting anything (at least for just that night.) He claims he does not want to be the bad guy, so he does not choose to be the way he is, but he just is. He does not do them to be a “bad guy,” nor does he want to be. Instead of seeing himself as a bad guy, he sees himself as simply a loner (which, again, works with my sociopath/psychopath idea.) With the last part of the third line (baby) and the last line, this makes me think that perhaps this “lover” or whatever to him has found out what he is or what he has done and has “gotten in his way.” Either that or perhaps he did not plan on killing or hurting anyone that night, but this person caught him off guard and now he wants to kill him/her, feeling an urge to perhaps.
“I can’t decide/ Whether you should live or die/ Oh, you’ll probably go to heaven/ Please don’t hang your head and cry/ No wonder why
My heart feels dead inside/ It’s cold and hard and petrified/ Lock the doors and close the blinds/ We’re going for a ride” Well, for the most part I find the chorus to be pretty straightforward. The guy is contemplating whether or not he should kill this person, he is not sure whether or not he should. He tells the person that he/she will probably go to heaven, implying they are most likely a good person, so they should stop crying. Sociopaths/psychopaths do not feel emotions, or at least very many, and are not touchy-feely sort of people. Crying would make most of them probably uncomfortable or they just would not care. He is telling him/her that he/she should not worry if he kills them because they will not go to Hell. The singer says his heart is dead, cold, hard, and petrified… all descriptions of him being a sociopath/psychopath, or a killer. He is emotionless. This also tells me he does not truly love or care about the person because he is saying his heart is basically stone. At first when he talks about locking the doors, closing the blinds, and going for a ride, I was confused. I was taking the “going for a ride” literally and I was wondering why he would mention the door and blinds if they were going in a car ride. It then hit me that he was talking about locking the door so no one can get in or out, closing the blinds so that no one would see them or he/she could get help, and “going for a ride” which I think is him killing the person.
“It’s a bitch convincing people to like you/ If I stop now call me a quitter” The singer is saying it is difficult for him to get people to like him. He has to work at it. This once again confirms for me that he is a sociopath/psychopath and this just explains his behavior. He then says while it is annoying and he has to work at it, he will not stop and continue to work at it. I am not entirely sure about the line “If lies were cats you’d be a litter.” It may mean that he has lied to this person a lot, which is the litter of lie, or that perhaps this person has lied to him a lot. Again, I am not positive which one… “Pleasing everyone isn’t like you” makes me think that this person is just not a person who usually likes to please people. If I put this song in the context of a story, perhaps the person is trying to please the singer, not wanting to die, so he is saying that that behavior is not like him/her. I am also not entirely sure about the lines “Dancing jigs until I’m crippled/ Slug ten drinks I won’t get pickled.” In my opinion, it might mean he has tried to get himself to feel, but nothing has seemed to work.
“I’ve got to hand it to you/ You’ve played by all the same rules” I said there are a few lines which confused me, and these are two of them. I am not sure whether this means that the person actually did kill or do things with him since he said “played by all the same rules,” but I am not sure or positive on that. Maybe this just means the rules of life. Again, I am not positive on either one of those. “It takes the truth to fool me/ And now you’ve made me angry” Perhaps the person told him hold they felt about him or the situation. He is so used to lie that he is surprised and maybe even a little fooled or caught of guard by the truth. Either that or the person lied and knows he/she lied because only the truth can fool him. Either way, this makes him angry, to which it goes back to chorus where he is wondering if he should kill the person.
“Oh I could throw you in the lake/ Or feed you poisoned birthday cake” Well, so the guy is basically pondering on the different ways he could kill him/her. He then thinks about how he will miss the person after he kills him/her with “I wont deny I’m gonna miss you when you’re gone.” Now, if he truly care/loved this person, he would not be contemplating killing him/her. While he says he will miss the person, it is not sincere because he says “when you are gone,” which implies he will probably kill him/her. What also does not make it sincere is that right after he briefly thinks that he’ll miss the person after he murders them, he goes back to another way of killing him/her with “Oh I could bury you alive.” The singer is a little worried about killing the person, which is evident in “But you might crawl out with a knife/ And kill me when I’m sleeping/ That’s why.” He is wondering if he tries to bury the person alive, if they will not die, and come after him for revenge and kill him while he is sleeping. Either that or he is afraid of the consequences of killing her, like perhaps jail or getting caught. Because he is worried that is why he is wondering whether they should live or die (going back to the chorus after that.)
Tah dah! And that is how I interpret I Can’t Decide by the Scissor Sisters. =D
I am curious… does anyone else have any other ideas of what it could be about, or any different interpretations? Perhaps also, if you agree with the him really wondering if he should kill the person, than do you think he killed him/her? I am leaning towards he did, but what do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts. =D
